WoolSorting
If you enjoy WoolSorting
WoolSorting is a color sorting puzzle where strands of wool sit stacked on rods, one colored layer on top of another. Your job is to move the top layer of any rod onto an empty rod, or onto a rod whose top layer is the same color, until every rod holds a single unbroken color.
It is free to play in the browser with nothing to install. The first boards are gentle, then more colors appear and the stacks get deeper, so a puzzle that looked easy suddenly needs a plan.

What is WoolSorting?
It belongs to the same family as water sorting and ball sorting puzzles, but with wool. Each rod is a column holding several colored layers. A move takes the exposed top layer off one rod and drops it on another, and it only lands if the destination is empty or already shows that same color on top. You win a board when the colors are fully separated, one color per rod. There is no timer and no failure state, so the pressure comes from running out of legal moves, not from the clock.
Controls: moving wool between rods
One button does everything. Click a rod to lift its top layer, then click a second rod to place it.
| Action | Desktop | Mobile |
|---|---|---|
| Pick up top layer | Left click a rod | Tap a rod |
| Place the layer | Left click the target rod | Tap the target rod |
| Cancel a pickup | Click the same rod again | Tap the same rod again |
The stacking and matching rule
The whole puzzle runs on one rule, and understanding it is most of the game. Only the outermost layer of a rod is ever in play, and it can go to just two kinds of spot.
| Situation | Can you move there? |
|---|---|
| Target rod is empty | Yes, any color can go on an empty rod |
| Target top layer matches your color | Yes, colors of a kind stack together |
| Target top layer is a different color | No, the move is blocked |
| Target rod is already full | No, there is no room |
How the boards get harder
Early boards use a handful of colors and shallow stacks, so you can often solve them by eye. As you go, the game adds more wool colors and taller columns, which means more layers are buried under the wrong ones. A single empty rod becomes precious because it is your only staging space for untangling a knot of mixed colors.
Tips for untangling a tricky board
- Keep at least one rod empty as long as you can. It is your workspace for shuffling colors around.
- Look for a color that is almost gathered already and finish it first to free up a rod.
- Do not bury a color you will need soon. Moving a layer onto a mixed stack can trap the color below it.
- Plan two or three moves ahead before you touch anything, since undoing a bad stack costs extra moves.
- When you stall, scan every rod top for a legal match you skipped rather than forcing a random move.
Is WoolSorting free and can I play it unblocked?
Yes to both. The game runs entirely in your browser, so there is nothing to download, no account, and no install. That also means it works on a school or work network wherever browser games are allowed. Open this page, press play, and start sorting.
Why the sorting loop works
The satisfaction is in the click of a color finally clicking home. Every board is a small closed problem with a clean solution hiding inside it, and the moment you spot the order to unstack things, the rest falls out fast. It is a quiet, low stakes puzzle you can pick up for one board or ten.
